Hot Chillys - Base Layer 101

Importance of Base Layer

A good performance base layer should keep you warm and dry. At Hot Chillys, we design our base layer to do all that and more.

Hot Chillys Base Layer Performance Characteristics

  • Hot Chillys base layer wraps the body in soft, comfortable fabrics that feel good against the skin and keep the body warm.
  • Hot Chillys base layer is designed with our exclusive “MTF” (moisture transport fiber) technology to move away moisture and keep you dry.
  • Many Hot Chillys base layer products are made with flat seam construction to avoid abrasion and provide a more comfortable fit during activity.
  • Many Hot Chillys products use our Bio-Silver or Bio Del Mar anti-microbial treatments to help fight odor causing bacteria. And, these treatments last the life of the garment!
  • Easy care. Machine wash, tumble dry low.

Do you like it loose or snug? We’re talking about how you like your base layer to fit. Hot Chillys makes relaxed fit base layer for those that like it loose and body fit base layer for those that like it snug.

Loose Fit vs. Snug Fit

  • Hot Chillys loose fit base layer products are great for those that like the more relaxed feeling of a loose fit garment. Many of our loose fit garments are designed to look cool while keeping you warm and dry on or off the slopes.
  • Hot Chillys snug fit base layer products take performance base layer to another level by fitting like a second skin that does an excellent job of keeping you warm while moving away moisture. Designed to do the job with a fashionable, athletic look.
At Hot Chillys we engineer the most advanced performance products possible. We test and retest for function and durability, then add two parts fun and a cold cerveza. ‘Cuz if you’re not having fun, it’s just not worth it!

The Details

Even during minimal activity, the body gives off moisture in the form of perspiration. When it is cold, this moisture can present a risk if it is not moved away from the body. A moist garment against the skin that comes in contact with cold air can cause the body temperature to drop rapidly, increasing the risk of hypothermia (any condition in which the temperature of a body drops below the level required for normal metabolism and/or bodily function to take place).

Many untreated natural fibers like cotton, wool and silk do an excellent job of absorbing moisture but they are not as efficient at moving moisture away from the body as synthetic, hollow core fibers.

Since base layer is the first layer, it is important that it keep you warm and dry so that the other layers we wear can continue to move the moisture away from the body while also helping to keep the body warm and protected from the elements. If the base layer is not doing its job, it is far more difficult for the other layers to keep you warm and dry.
